Criteria

Before any child is admitted to the school it is important that we meet you and your child to discuss their needs and suitability to the specialist curriculum at Birtley.   We are happy to conduct visits at your convenience.  Please contact Mrs Emma Sillitoe,   Headteacher,  to arrange.

Assessments

We are happy to discuss any assessments your child may have had from other professional bodies.  We also offer assessment screenings for specific learning difficulties (for children over 6). 

Birtley House Independent School Admissions Criteria

1. Children with a professional diagnosis * of Specific Learning Difficulties eg. Dyslexia or Dyscalculia as a PRIMARY NEED.

2. Children with mild Speech Language Communication Need (SLCN) mainly phonological / grammatical OR a semantic / pragmatic language difficulty.

3. Children with mild language delay.

4. Children with Aspergers and other Autistic Spectrum Disorders will be considered at the discretion of the Headteacher.

5. Children who are performing below national expectations and do not have a professional diagnosis will be considered at the discretion of the Headteacher.

Children Excluded by the Selection Criteria.

Currently we do not have the facilities to support pupils with the following needs:

  1. Children with a Statement of SEN except in exceptional circumstances and at the discretion of the Headteacher.
  2. Children with severe learning difficulties or severe and complex speech and language needs.
  3. Children with a PRIMARY NEED of a physical disability.
  4. Children with a PRIMARY NEED of a behavioural emotional disorder.
  5. Children with hearing loss of <40 decibels or a moderate-severe visual impairment.
