The Waterfall Pathway is a structured, sequential approach to learning aligned with the principles of the TEACCH framework. It is designed to support children who benefit from high levels of structure, predictability and routine. Like a waterfall moving through clearly defined levels, this pathway emphasises step-by-step progression through carefully scaffolded stages. Learning environments are highly organised, with a strong focus on visual clarity and consistency to support understanding and reduce anxiety.
Key features include visual schedules, structured work systems and individual workstations, all of which promote independence and engagement within the curriculum.
Learning is broken down into manageable steps, allowing children to build confidence and competence over time, at whatever academic level they are working at.
Personalised targets are central to this pathway and are directly linked to each child’s EHCP focus areas. These targets ensure that learning is meaningful and supports progress in key areas such as communication, social interaction, independence and emotional regulation. Progression is carefully monitored, with children moving forward only when they are ready.

The River Pathway is a flexible, curiosity-led approach to teaching and learning that supports children to explore, discover and develop skills through meaningful, engaging experiences. It acts as a bridge between structured and formal learning, while maintaining a child-centred ethos. Learning flows in response to children’s interests and motivations, encouraging active participation, exploration and problem-solving. Teaching staff facilitate learning by observing, guiding and extending experiences, while gradually introducing more structure and adult-led teaching.
Personalised targets, aligned with each child’s EHCP, remain at the core of this pathway. These are embedded naturally within learning experiences, ensuring that development across communication, social interaction, independence and emotional understanding is continuously supported.
Differentiated areas of the curriculum are embedded within play-based and exploratory activities. This allows learners to access subject knowledge and skills in a meaningful and developmentally appropriate way, while beginning to prepare for more formalised learning.

The Ocean Pathway represents the stage where children engage in a more formal, structured model of education. It builds upon the foundations developed in earlier pathways and prepares children for future opportunities, including further education, accreditation and adulthood. Teaching follows a scaffolded approach, where new learning is carefully modelled, supported and practised. Support is gradually reduced to promote independence and confidence.
The curriculum is differentiated and multisensory, adapted to meet a wide range of needs. Learning is delivered through visual, auditory and kinaesthetic methods, ensuring accessibility and engagement. Lessons are structured with clear objectives and opportunities for consolidation and application.
Despite the increased formality, individual EHCP outcomes remain central. Personalised targets are integrated across all subject areas, ensuring that children continue to develop key life skills alongside academic knowledge.
